Robert Risley Designs and Costings 1889

Throughout 1889 Robert Risley's Designs for Shawls and Tablecovers changed to reflect the fashion for Indian and Scottish-inspired heritage, Colour and Weave, textured wools, Camel hair, Silk yarn and Jacquard Weave experimentation. The designs are in chronological order from January 1st.

Samples reflecting Indian and Persian influence with motifs and colour.

Flashes of primary colours begin to appear in traditional beige/brown shawl fabric.

Persian fabrics and motifs begin to have a direct influence on designed shawl fabrics produced on jacquard looms.

Design showing influence of Paisley Pattern that originated in India and Middle East.

Jacquard Twill base (in dark colours) with Twill as an Extra Warp in bright Red, Yellow and Blue.

Colour wefts through Jacquard Twill designs to give an 'all over sheen effect' and an 'all over Check'. Interesting Colour and Weave proportions and ribbed effect in the 'all over Check'.

Interesting effects gained from adding Primary colour stripe proportions through Jacquard designs in black and white.

Design development of the Persian motifs.

Using White Chenille yarn to enhance Colour and Weave effects.
